Food (pun intended) for thought for those moms who are getting ready to start solids. Is rice cereal the best to start as many of us are told??? I personally encourage moms to stay away from rice cereal since there isn’t any real value in it’s being a first food. Apparently it is NOT hypoallergenic.
This does make sense for me because now that I look back, my second child was in the hospital at 5 months because he couldn’t hold any food down — his intestinal system had been destroyed. Never could tolerate any food other than a special formula until well over a year. Thanks to the docs who told me I’d not have enough breastmilk to breastfeed and thus started the whole nightmare! And thanks to the culture that told an impressionable young mom that it was the thing to do to put rice cereal in the bottle to get them to sleep longer at night!

Conclusions: This study highlights the emerging importance of rice, a food commonly thought to be “hypoallergenic”, as a significant trigger of FPIES. Paediatricians should be aware that rice not only has the potential to cause FPIES, but that such reactions tend be more severe than those caused by cow’s milk/soy.
