Alliance Breastfeeding Center was created to provide families in Colorado Springs, CO and the surrounding community with a source for accurate breastfeeding information and quality supplies.
I started the business by offering professional breastfeeding help in the home and opened my office in March 2003. I had a few items for sale and a few pumps and scales to rent if needed.
I now offer a greatly expanded line of breastfeeding items for sale including consignment clothing, bras, blankets, pillows, books, slings, and much more. We expanded our rental fleet to over 50 at one time, and as the hospital saw that we were meeting the need they had neglected, they decided to jump on the bandwagon. Now we have around 15 pumps and several scales. Our prices are a little bit higher than some of the other rental stations in town, however we also offer service that no one else does (NOT even the hospital!). When someone rents a pump or scale from us, they are definitely getting their money’s worth!
I offer home consultations as well as office consultations. While my consults need to be paid in advance with possible reimbursement by insurance, I feel that I offer a valuable and unique service not available from the often overwhelmed lactation nurses in the hospital.
Lactation Consultants:
Lactation Consultants will be registered with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and will hold the designation IBCLC, RLC or International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Registered Lactation Consultant. We require our Lactation Consultants (just me at present) to update themselves regularly with research based information. We don’t give a specific recommendation by rote: rather we tailor recommendations specifically to each family. Our goal in a consult is to give you recommendations and teach you methods to help you reach your goals, whatever they might be. We try to help you work the circumstances you find youself in — not a one-size-fits-all ideal circumstance.
Cindi
- The co-owner of the business, Cindi Swisher, is a Registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
- She has over 10 years experience helping moms and babies breastfeed, over 20 years parenting experience, and has breastfed 4 children of her own. She has volunteered for the Army (ACS New Parent Support in Korea – teaching childbirth and breastfeeding classes and providing breastfeeding support) and American Red Cross – teaching CPR and Babysitting classes. She has a special empathy with military families and diverse cultural beliefs. Her husband (and co-owner) is retired from the Army after over 22
years.
The Swisher Family
- Cindi also worked as a Lactation Counselor at one of Colorado Springs’ hospitals for over 1 1/2 years and understands first hand the challenges that families face with breastfeeding. One of the needs she noticed is for good quality breastfeeding help in the home. Cindi’s RN experience has been in Blood Banking (Apheresis), ER, and Postpartum (Mom/Baby).
